You don’t have to be a designer, or even a decorating guru, to create your own designer bathroom. Some design elements, decorating tips and do-it-yourself projects are easy to tackle and can make a big impact on your bathroom.

If your bathroom needs some love and if you want a designer bathroom without the hefty price tag, here are five tips for you.

Update the Lighting

Good lighting in your bathroom will make all the difference. Make sure the room has adequate light and update the fixtures where needed. Adding lights above your vanity mirror and counter tops can give the room a designer feel and add a lot of light to the area. Bathroom lighting doesn’t have to be boring, so don’t be afraid to use pieces that bring character and interest to the room.

Enhance the Mirror

Designer bathrooms usually have glamorous mirrors. But, don’t worry. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a designer mirror to get this look. If the mirror above your sink is attached directly to your wall, with unfinished edges, try this DIY trick: attach molding to the wall around the mirror to frame it. You can use as detailed or ornate molding as you want and finish it with a coat of paint or a rich stain.

Use Coordinated Linens and Accessories

When your towels, rugs, shower curtain and drapes go together, your bathroom will look like a designer created it. These items don’t necessarily need to match exactly, but using colors that go together will give your bathroom a professional look.

Don’t Forget the Walls

For some reason it is easy to neglect the walls in the bathroom. But, by adding artwork, a clock, planters and other accessories, you are giving your bathroom the designer treatment. Use wall accessories to add balance and interest to your bathroom and to make it look like a natural part of the house, not just extra space you aren’t sure what to do with.

Consider Remodeling

Remodeling projects like adding storage and installing new fixtures or tiling projects or toilet repair projects can enhance your bathroom. Some of these projects can be done on your own and others will require the help of a professional. Start by deciding what changes you want to make and then consult a plumber to find out what precautions and steps you should to take to make sure your plumbing continues to work properly.

Giving your bathroom a designer makeover is easy. With a few updates, some added accessories and a few DIY projects, your bathroom can become a luxurious escape.
