Organizing Solutions for Any Basement

The basement tends to be one of those places that attracts clutter. If your basement is overrun with clutter and lacks organization, these solutions can help. The secret to organizing your basement is identifying what you need and then implementing a system.

One of the easiest ways to get organized is to install extra shelves. You can go with bookcases or simple shelves that you install directly on the wall. Shelves are perfect for books, videos, entertainment centers, and dozens of other things that can add to the clutter. You can make this storage solution more visually appealing by adding accessories and things like bins and baskets to the shelves.

Built-In Cabinets

If you are looking for a more built-in solution, adding a built-in shelving and cabinet unit can add a lot of storage. You could take this to the extreme and convert an entire wall into storage for all kinds of things from office and craft supplies to movies and games. A built-in unit can also add to your basement’s design and make it feel more finished and homey.

Closet Organization Kits

If you have closets in your basement, you can use closet organization kits to take full advantage of them. These kits include everything you need to install shelves, closet rods and cabinets, so you don’t waste any precious closet space. Keep in mind that it is best not to use closets that house your furnace, water heater or sump pump. These utility closets should not be used for storage so appliances can work properly and a technician can easily access them if needed.

Cubbies

Storage units that are made up of several smaller openings for boxes and bins are perfect for the basement. These cubbies can help you corral clutter and keep your basement organized and tidy. Cubby units with low shelves are also a good pick for kids, since you can keep toys, books and games tucked inside but still within easy reach.

Cedar Chests and Storage Benches

Cedar chests and storage benches are the perfect place for storing extra blankets, games and craft supplies. These storage-adding furniture pieces add to the look and feel of your basement, but have the added bonus of giving you one more place to organize clutter. If you have a walkout basement, you can create a small entryway with the storage bench, a coat rack and a rug.

Start regaining control of your basement and make it a more comfortable, usable space with these storage solutions. Remember to find solutions that fit well with your basement design and layout and that don’t obstruct things like your furnace or sump pump.
